7 reasons why you should participate in an Erasmus Exchange Program

Erasmus exchange is a life experience that I will never forget. If you are currently studying or will soon start a course at a college or university, there is a high change that you too can study a period to another country in Europe. I have listed a couple reasons to convince you to do an Erasmus.

1. Make friends from all over Europe
More than 3 million young Europeans annually go to another university or college to study there, including a few thousand from Belgium. A big chance that you will meet other Belgians during your exchange. If not, do not worry, because all international students want to get everything out of their Erasmus, just like you. You certainly make countless new friends.

2. Learn a new language
A big advantage of studying in another country is that you learn to speak the language of your destination. Because you live in the country, you have no choice but to learn the language of the local population. You may even have to follow your courses in the local language. In the beginning that will take a while, but after a while you notice that you are making progress and before you know it you know your new language to perfection!

3. Discover new cultures
The Erasmus exchange program is named after the learned Erasmus of Rotterdam (1465-1563), a Dutch academic who lived in a large number of countries during his life and was inspired by the many cultures he met there. He believed that you only really learn a language when you immerse yourself in the culture of the country where the language is spoken.

4. Receive financial support for the most important costs
There is a scholarship available for every Erasmus student so that you can pay the first costs, such as your room. The amount depends on your destination. For the relatively expensive EU countries this year I received around €300 a / month. As an Erasmus student you can also count on discounts in bars and discotheques at most destinations.

5. Academic recognition
The time that you are abroad is anything but a waste of time. If you pass all your courses, you will receive the credits that you would otherwise have had to earn at your own university. In addition, you learn to speak a new language and gain international experience, which is nice on your CV.

6. A stronger CV
As we mentioned above: studying abroad is definitely a bonus on your CV. It is seen by many employers as proof that you are self-employed. It often means that you are multilingual and have knowledge of cultural differences. A study even showed that 31% of companies find international experience a requirement!

7. Experience the time of your life!
The most important reason to go to Erasmus exchange is because you undoubtedly have an unforgettable time. Many ex-Erasmus students still see their time abroad as the most beautiful time of their lives. Chances are that this will also be the case for you. Do not hesitate and go for it!
